2019 Fall BPM Program is LitUp

The 2019 Beta Phi Mu, Beta Epsilon Chapter, Fall program took place on October 25, 2019 at the Kansas Library Association Conference in Overland Park, KS.  BPM20195 (2)Chapter Vice-President, Amanda Harrison introduced the featured presenters, Emery Uhlig, and Sara Peterson-Davis.  Uhlig is the founder of LitUP: Books and Art for the Next Generation and Peterson-Davis is the Special Events Coordinator for Mid-Continent Public Library in Independence, MO, the sponsoring library for the 2-year-old festival.

The program showcased the partnership between a teen with a passion for books and authors and a library’s collaboration to help make her conference dream a reality.  Having produced a second successful event in Independence, LitUP Conferences are now being planned in other parts of the country with Uhlig’s help and suggestions.  Audience members came away with ideas of challenges, successes, and suggestions for fundraising and raising awareness to help plan their own similar teen events. In the hour preceding the Conference Program, Beta Epsilon chapter President, Carmaine Ternes, conducted a business meeting and Initiation Ceremony for two new members.   A Treasurer’s report, minutes from our last meeting, a SLIM report from our current faculty sponsor, Dr. Andrew Smith, and a presidential report of the chapter’s past year activities were all included.

Beta Phi Mu recognizes the scholastic achievement and leadership potential of LIS graduates, and fosters the values of scholarship, leadership, and service in its members.

The Executive Committee of Beta Epsilon Chapter of Beta Phi Mu extends a hearty congratulations and a welcome to all our 2019 new members.  We are proud of your accomplishments!

Celebrating 70 Years of BPM!

cropped-bpm_header_anchor.gifThis summer, Beta Phi Mu International Library and Information Studies Honor Society held its annual business meeting, new member induction, and program during the American Library Association Annual Conference in New Orleans.

Dr. Em Claire Knowles of Simmons College presented the keynote address and an urgent call to BPM members to be regular and generous in financial giving and continuous service to BPM.  Each year BPM presents over $10,000 in scholarships and awards for beginning studies in Library and Information Science, continuing education for Beta Phi Mu members, international research, and more.

Following BPM International’s example, Beta Epsilon chapter will extend this opportunity to our members to consider honoring 70 years of Beta Phi Mu with a donation to the important work of our chapter.  Providing programming and supporting state Library Conferences is one of the initiatives which Beta Epsilon chapter participates in to support and encourage the scholarly work of library and information professionals.

Please honor Beta Phi Mu’s 70th year with a donation.
