Check out the Pipeline…

Carmaine Ternes

Did you know that Beta Phi Mu has an online newsletter which contains a wealth of information to help you stay connected with the national organization? It’s published on the website (http://www.betaphimu.org/newsletter.html) in the fall and spring.

Our chapter prioritizes sharing our activities and news with other members across the country, so you’ll find some of our highlights with each publication. But this issue is really special! We’re so excited to find an informational interview with our very own Past President, Carmaine Ternes. Please take a minute and check out page 3 of the latest issue of the pipeline here: Spring/ Summer 2022 issue.

Carmaine, we’re so grateful for all you do to promote our library profession! Congratulations to you!

Congratulations, Jan Brooks

This is not just any week. This week on Friday when Jan Brooks, our librarian colleague and friend, gathers her belonging and heads out the door of the Billings Library at Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, KS USA, she will begin her well-earned retirement. Jan, a graduate of the Emporia State University, Master of Library Science program and honored member of Beta Phi Mu, the international library and information studies honor society, will likely enjoy seeing the sunrise as usual but from the front porch of her home, with a good book and time to enjoy leisure reading and much more.

For the past 14 years (and a few months), Jan has enthusiastically served as a professional librarian in interlibrary loan where she always worked to improve user experiences. In addition to processing lending and borrowing activities, Jan managed the library’s interface to WorldShare Interlibrary Loan, the largest resource-sharing network in the world; collected data for assessment; and, provided instruction to students and faculty on the library’s resources. Decisions about library acquisitions, privacy, and customer service were often based on information that Jan provided.

In addition to her responsibilities at JCCC, Jan served on the Mid-America Library Alliance Interlibrary Loan Courier Committee as well as the Interlibrary Loan Special Interest Group. During the 2014-15 academic year, Jan served as President of Emporia State University’s Beta Epsilon Chapter of Beta Phi Mu. Jan continues to serve as Beta Epsilon Chapter Treasurer.

About her retirement, Jan said, “While I will miss our library and interlibrary loan immensely, I hope to pursue some other activities including writing, quilting, and seeing more of those grandkiddos! And I hope to stay in touch with the profession through Beta Epsilon and KLA.”

This is not “so long” but instead “see you soon.” We intend to keep you close, Jan. We wish you all the best in your retirement.
